Ontario landlords get go-ahead for small rent hike

Landlords in Ontario have been given permission to raise rent by 0.7 per cent in 2011 -- the lowest rent hike for Ontario residents in the last 35 years.

Ontario cabinet minister Jim Bradley says the rent increase will strike a balance between what tenants can afford and what landlords can charge.

The guidelines provide the maximum amount a landlord is able to hike the rent without getting approval from the Landlord and Tenant Board.

The government says this year's guidelines for increasing rent are sitting at the lowest level in the history of Ontario rent regulation.

Meanwhile, a provincial landlords' organization is slamming the small hike. The group says landlords have been forced to absorb increased costs in hydro, gas and the HST, and can't afford such a small increase.

B.C.: 2.3%

Manitoba: 1.5%

Ontario: 0.7%
