Re: OLA in the News: Do Renters Need Insurance?
The act stipulates that landlords are responsible for ensuring residences are in "a good state of repair and fit for habitation and for complying with health, safety, housing and maintenance standards."
If a landlord is found to have violated that stipulation (which always is the reality unless the tenant is an arsonist ), and a tenant's belongings are damaged as a result, the landlord is required to compensate the tenant.
Cut through the truthiness and feel good 'kumbiya' groupthink of landlords patting themselves on each others backs and kissing each others behinds here, reality sets in.

What if a neighboring tenant has a grease fire and the fire damages a neighbor's property? This is not the LLs fault, the tenant is not an arsonist. It was an accident which caused damage.Openborders wrote:The act stipulates that landlords are responsible for ensuring residences are in "a good state of repair and fit for habitation and for complying with health, safety, housing and maintenance standards."

If you had no contents insurance you'd be screwed.
Similarly, if your apt is burglarized, this is not the landlords fault either, as in the article's example.
Sorry to cut through your delusion.

Here is just one from google. You have no idea what you are talking about.Openborders wrote:Poorly written article and bizarre manipulative posts here.
Reality is tenants don't need contents insurance to be compensated in case of fires and other events. Under the Residential Tenancies Act, if the fire isn't the renter's fault, the landlord will be responsible for providing compensation for lost contents.
Sorry for destroying the "truthiness" that goes on in this forum.

Or someone is going to come in and say if you don't have possessions it's not worth having.
